Limbic lobe Flashcards
What are the different parts of the limbic lobe?
cingulate gyrus, hippocampal formation, subcallosal gyrus, amygdala, septum, parahypocampal gyrus, olfactory cortex, uncus
What are the functions of the limbic lobe?
the 4 F’s, learning and memory, values and decisions(motivation), emotion
What is the role of the fornix?
Main circuitry connecting limbic lobe to diencephalon and visceral centers of hypothalamus
amygdala
controls drive and motivation, agression, mating, stress-mediated responses, memory, feeding, drinking
hippocampus
learning and memory (new information)
cingulate gyrus
anxiety and altered behavior (panic and compulsion)
septal nuclei
hormonal secretion, behavioral reaction, memory facilitation
What can be the effects of a lesion in the limbic system?
uninhibited instinctual acts, altered sexual behavior, excessive fear, aggression, disturbances in circadian rhythm
