Diencephalon Flashcards
What are the 4 parts of the diencephalon?
Thalamus, epithalamus, subthalamus, hypothalamus
What is the function of the thalamus?
- Transmission of sensorimotor information to cortex
- Contribution to cortically mediated sensorimotor, speech & language functions
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
- With connections to brain, brainstem, & spinal cord by neural & hormonal efferents, provides specialized circuitry for:
- -Autonomic nervous system
- -Body temperature, blood volume, food & water intake, body mass, reproduction, circadian rhythms, drives & emotions
What includes the pituitary gland?
hypothalamus
What includes the pineal gland?
epithalamus
What is the function of the epithalamus?
sleep cycle (melatonin), autonomic functions
What is the function of the subthalamus?
Connected with basal ganglia, major role in motor control
What is a possible effect of a lesion on the thalamus?
thalamic syndome ( increased or decreased threshold for sensations of pain, touch, and temperature on contralateral side of body)
The medial geniculate body is a ________ pathway.
auditory (m=music)
The lateral geniculate body is a _________ pathway.
visual (l=light)
