Ligaments of the Hip & Knee Flashcards
Attachments of ligaments and function (action prevention)
Iliofemoral ligament
AIIS + intertrochanteric line of the femur
- prevents extension
- stabilises hip joint during standing
Ischiofemoral ligament
body of the ischium + the greater trochanter of the femur
- prevents medial rotation
Pubofemoral ligament
superior pubic rami + the intertrochanteric line of the femur
- prevents extreme abductions
Ligamentum teres
*blood supply
(ligament of the head of femur)
acetabular fossa + the fovea of the femur
- weak and hase little influence on joint stabilization of hip.
- transmits the acetabular branch of the obturator artery into the head of femur
Acetabular labrum
Around acetabulum
- deepens the socket to increase stability of the joint
Tibial collateral ligament (MCL)
medial femoral epicondyle + medial condyle of tibia
- resists knee abduction (valgus stress - lateral force) (also flexion)
Fibular collateral ligament (LCL)
lateral femoral epicondyle + head of fibula
- resists knee adduction (varus stress - medial force) (also flexion)
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
posterior intercondylar area + anterior tibia
- resists anterior sliding of the tibia on the femur
Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
anterior intercondylar area of femur + posterior tibia
- resists posterior sliding of the tibia relative to the femur
Lateral and medial menisci
tibial spine + tibial spine
- deepen the knee joint to
resist rotational stress at the knee
Bursae
reduce wear and tear and therefore, prevent damage and pain by being placed between structures that would otherwise rub against eachother
Posterior (dorsal) interosseous sacroiliac ligament
Iliac tuberosity to the posterior surface of the sacrum
Prevents forward and downward dislocation of the sacrum from the ilia.
Assists to prevent sacral nutation
Long posterior sacroiliac ligament
PSIS to Sacrum
Prevents extreme counter nutation
Iliolumbar ligament
Iliac crest to the transverse processes of 5th lumbar vertebrae
Prevents forward dislocation of L5 on the downward sloping upper surface of the sacrum
Sacrotuberous ligament
Lateral Sacrum to Ischial tuberosity
Prevents sacral nutation
