Gait Flashcards
What are the 8 stages of gate? What phases are they apart of?
Stance phase:
- heel strike
- loading response
- mid-stance
- terminal stance
- pre-swing
Swing phase:
- toe-off
- mid-swing
- terminal swing
During walking what percentage of gait is the swing phase?
40%
During walking what percentage of gait is the stance phase?
60%
What is the windlass mechanism?
When the hallux extends the arch of the foot is lifted. During walking, when the heel lifts up the hallux extends.
- Allows for shock absorption
What is trendelenburg gait? What causes it? Which phase is it most prominent in?
Contralateral hip drop caused by weak hip adductors, gluteus medius and minimus, on the opposite side.
Can affected due to problem with the superior gluteal nerve.
Stance phase
What is a gluteus maximus lurch? What causes it? ** not finished
Torso moves posteriorly during heel strike.
Gluteus maximus is weak and cant prevent excessive flexion at the hip. Torso moves backward to move the moment arm of gluteus maximus close to the hip.
Can be due to damage to the inferior gluteal nerve.
