Ligament Ruptures Flashcards
CCL Rupture
Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture
What causes CCL rupture?
Sudden hyperextension of the stifle while exercising
Cranial Cruciate Ligament Rupture (CCL)
is a major cause of DJD. What does DJD stand for?
Degenerative Joint Disease
A rupture is a major injury while a tear is refered to as what?
Minor instability
Most likely candidate for CCL rupture
Middle-age, obese, inactive animals
50% of CCL injuries also result in what other injury?
Meniscal injury
CCL injury is infrequent in what animal?
Cat
What are the clinical signs of CCL injury?
- Acute onset
- Non-weight bearing or limping
- Internal rotation of tibia when weight bearing attempted
- Possible stifle effusion
Diagnosis of CCL injury (3)
- Cranial drawer movement
- Tibial compression test (tibial thrust)
- Radiographs
Treatment of CCL injury (3)
- Surgical Stabilization
- Weight loss for obese animals
- Cage rest for 3-4 weeks
Surgical stabilization for CCL injury in small animals (less than 15 pounds)
Extraarticular: Use of suture to stabilize the joint.
Surgical stabilization for CCL injury in larger animals
Intraarticular: TPLO
(tibial plateau leveling osteotomy)
