Erythrocyte Disorders Flashcards
What species are frequently diagnosed with erythrocyte disorders?
Dogs and Cats
Erthrocyte Disorders are associated with what 3 circumstances?
- Decreased production of erythrocytes
- Increased destruction of erythrocytes
- Inappropriate loss (hemorrhage)
What is one of the most common laboratory findings?
Anemia
Anemia is usually secondary to another major cause. Name a few.
- Hemorrhage
- Hemolysis
- Blood Parasites
- Iron Deficiency
- Immune-mediated disease
- Toxins
What are the two types of Anemia?
Regenerative and Non-Regenerative
What is Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA)?
RBCs coated with antibodies causing the immune system to destroy them.
Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia is 4 times more prevalent in females.
There are many clinical signs of IMHA. Name a few.
- Anorexia
- Listlessness, weakness
- Depression
- Tachycardia , tachypnea
- Pale mucus membranes
- Icterus
- Hepatomegaly, Splenomegaly
Diagnosis of IMHA
CBC: Leukocytosis
Absolute Neutrophilia / Left Shift
Regenerative Anemia - reticulocyte
Treatment of Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia
- Glucocorticoids
- Heparin to prevent thromboembolism
- Blood Transfusions
