Life Histories Flashcards
1
Q
Define cohort.
A
A group of individuals all of whom have the same age.
2
Q
What are the advantages of a cohort life table?
A
- Describes dynamics of an identified cohort
* An accurate representation of that cohort’s behaviour.
3
Q
What are the disadvantages of a cohort life table?
A
- Every individual in cohort must be identified and followed through entire life span
- Info from a given cohort cannot be extrapolated.
4
Q
What is a static life table?
A
Based on individuals of known age censused at a single time.
5
Q
What are the advantages of a static life table?
A
- Avoids problem of variation in environment
- can be constructed in one day
- reconstruction of past events.
6
Q
What are the disadvantages of a static life table?
A
- Must be able to age animals accurately
- Must assume that age specific mortality and fecundity have not changes over the populations history
- Only rarely is this justified.
7
Q
Define semelparity.
A
Only produce one clutch.
8
Q
Define iteroparity.
A
Produces more than one clutch.
9
Q
What is a life table?
A
A means of describing mortality schedule of a population.
