Communities Flashcards
Give examples of collective properties of a community.
(Sum)
•Species diversity
•Total biomass.
Give examples of emergent properties of a community.
(Interactions)
•Stability of food web
•Niche differentiation
•Energy flow.
Define emergent properties.
The result of all the species interactions within their environment.
Define collective properties.
Properties which are not the result of species interactions e.g. Species number and mass.
Define fundamental niche.
Niche of a species in the absence of competitors.
Define realised niche.
Restrictions to niche occupancy that occur because of interspecific competition.
Define competitive exclusion.
Two species competing for exactly the same resources (in the same niche) cannot coexist.
Define community ecology.
The study of the community level of organisation.
Define community.
An assemblage of species populations which occur together in space and time.
