Interspecific Competition 1 Flashcards
Define coexistence.
To exist together at the same time or in the same place.
Define niche.
The animals place in the biotic environment.
Define competitive exclusion.
When one species prevents all members of another species from utilising a resource and the inferior competitor goes locally extinct.
Define character displacement.
Alteration of morphology of a species as a result of the presence of interspecific competitors.
Define competition.
The contest for an essential resource by neighbouring individuals that are exploiting the same finite supply.
What is the species-redundancy hypothesis?
Maybe all species are so similar in what they do in a community, doesn’t matter if any/many are lost?
Define competitive release.
The expansion of a niche in the absence of a competitor.
Define fundamental niche.
The total range of environmental conditions suitable for existence in the absence of any competition.
Define realised niche.
The environmental conditions suitable for existence along with competition.
Define character displacement.
Alteration of morphology of a species as a result of the presence of interspecific competitors.
