Intraspecific 1 Flashcards
Define competition.
An interaction between individuals brought about by a shared requirement for a resource in limited supply.
What are the results of competition?
A reduction in the survivorship growth and/ or reproduction of at least some of the competing individuals.
Define population.
A group of interbreeding individuals of the same species/ the unit of evolution.
Give the equation that describes a graph of a population which reproduces at one time.
Nt+1 = NtR
N = number in population t = time R = replacement rate.
Give the equation which describes a graph of a population which reproduces continuously/ exponential growth equation.
dN/dt = rmaxN
N = number in population t = time r = intrinsic rate of increase.
How can you find the value of r using a logarithmic plot of population growth?
r = gradient of line.
What is r?
Intrinsic rate of increase.
If r=0 then the population…
Stays the same.
If r>0 then the population…
Increases.
If r
Decreases.
What is R?
Replacement rate.
