What was life like for a Monk.
Monks were men dedicated to a religious order and life in a monastery. A monastery was a closed religious community. Monks had very strict and basic lives. Monks would go to mass and pray in an oratory. They prayed 6-8 times a day. Monks usually grew all of their food so they did a lot of farm work. They would eat their meals in a refectory. They would copy manuscripts by hand and illustrate them with scribes in a scriptorium. Monks believed that being isolated in a monastery would let them focus more on god. At the end of their life the monks would be buried in a cemetery.
Life as medieval peasant
Medieval peasants lived in manor villages. In a manor village you would find mills for grinding wheat, forges for making tools and weapons and a house for a bailiff (a person who would collect rent and taxes and bring criminals to the lord for punishment. There was 2 types of peasants in a manor village. There was a serf and a freeman. The freeman lived the better life of the two. A serf would has to get permission from the lord to go anywhere. A freeman could leave at any time and could also get married. Medieval peasants would eat pottage and drink ale because it was safer to drink then water. They made their own clothes out of wool from sheep, dye from berries and shoes from leather.
