What are lichenoid disorders?
Conditions characterised by damage to the basal epidermis, resulting in itchy, flat-topped, violaceous papules
What is the main form of lichenoid disorder?
Lichen planus
What are some examples of lichenoid disorders?
Discoid lupus
Drug rashes
Erythema multiforme
Toxic epidermal necrolysis
How will lichen planus present on the skin?
6Ps:
Planar (flat-topped)
Purple
Polygonal
Pruritic
Papules and plaques
How can lichen planus affect the mouth?
Formation of oral lesions (Wicham’s striae) which resent as lacy white lesions on the inside of the cheek
What are some histological features of lichen planus on biopsy?
- Irregular saw tooth acanthosis
- Hypergranulosis and orthohyperkaratosis
- Band-like upper dermal infiltrates of lymphocytes
- Basal damage with formation of cytoid bodies (Dead epithelial cells in basal layer)
How is lichen planus usually managed?
Topical steroid + antihistamine
