Increased thickness of keratin layer
What is parakeratosis?
Persistence of nuclei in keratin layer
What is acanthosis?
Increased thickness of epithelium
What is papillomatosis?
Irregular epithelial thickening
What is spongiosis?
Oedema fluid between squames, which appears to increase prominence of intercellular prickles (If severe, vesicles filled by oedema fluid develop)
What are the 4 main reaction patterns of inflammatory skin disease?
Spongiotic
Psoriasiform
Lichenoid
Vesiculobullous
What is meant by spongiotic inflammatory skin disease?
Inflammatory skin disease with intraepidermal oedema (E.g. Eczema)
What is meant by psoriasiform inflammatory skin disease?
Inflammatory skin disease with elongation of rete ridges (E.g. Psoriasis)
What is meant by lichenoid inflammatory skin disease?
Inflammatory skin disease with basal layer damage (E.g. Lichen planus, lupus)
What is meant by vesiculobullous inflammatory skin disease?
Inflammatory skin disease with blistering (E.g. Pemphigoid, pemphigus, dermatitis herpetiformis)
