Sex
Assigned at birth and refers to one’s biologic status (anatomy, chromosomes, genes)
Gender
Social and cultural distinctions that go along with male or female sex
Gender identity
Refers to an individuals identification as male, female, some of both or other.
Cisgender
Sex and gender are congruent; gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.
Sexual orientation
Who are attracted to (homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual)
Gay
A man who self identifies as having an emotional, sexual and or relational attraction to another man.
-An overarching term describing people attracted to other members of the same gender
Lesbian
A woman who self-identifies as having an emotional, sexual and or relational attraction to other women
Bisexual
Someone who self identifies as having an emotional/sexual and or relational attraction to others of either sex
Transgender
An umbrella term for people who gender identity or gender expression differ from sex at birth
Transgender: MTF
male to female; trans female
Transgender FTM
female to male; trans male
Trans-sexual
Older term that is not used by many transgender person
Intersex
Having both male and female sex organs or other characteristics
Nonbinary gender identity
Gender identity is not exclusively male or female: Identify outside traditional male-female binary
-Pangender, agender, gender fluid, gender expansive, genderqueer
Pangender
Identify as more than one gender
Agender
Identify as no gender

Gender non-conforming
The extent to which a person’s gender identity, role or expression DIFFERS from cultural norms.
Gender dysphoria
A general term referring to discomfort or distress that is caused by a discrepancy b/n a person’s gender identity and that person’s sex assigned at birth.
