LFT Flashcards
What happens when there is a blockage in intra/extra hepatic ducts?
conjugated/unconjugated bilirubin builds up in blood
is conjugated more/less water soluble than unconjugated?
more
What happens when there is a blockage in the extrahepatic duct?
build up of soluble conjugated bilirubin, pass through the blood into the kidney. Patient has bilirbuinurea, bilirubin in urea
Does alkaline phosphatase have a high or low specificity for cholestasis
Low
Any blockage in intra/extra hepatic area increase ….which is known as the condition……
alkaline phosphatase
cholestasis
what are the 3 things that increase ALK PHOSPHATASE?
1- Cholestasis
2-pregnancy
3-bone disease-growth
What is another test besides alk phosphatase to confirm cholestasis?
gamma glutamyl transferase
How does one confirm cholestasis after through GGT test?
increase in GGT is only a sign of cholestasis and not bone growth (the process of elimination
What is gilberts disease?
autosomal dominant-increase in total bilirubin due to inexpression of GGT enzyme which is used to convert unconjugated -> conjugated bilirubin
What are the 3 enzymes involved in LFT?
ALT/AST
Alkaline phosphatase
