‘open’ to new membership, new words are added as language evolves
closed word classes
consists of words that do not readily admit new members
noun
the name of a person, place or thing
adjective
describes a noun or a pronoun, tells what kind, how many, or which one
verb
can tell what action someone or something is doing, can also express a state of being
adverb
describes a verb, adjectives or another adverb. tells how, when, where or to what degree
pronoun
used in place of a noun in a sentence, may take the name of a person, place or thing
preposition
combines with a noun or pronoun to form a phrase that tells something about another word in a sentence
article
the words a, an, and belong to a special group of adjectives called articles, can be used before a noun in a sentence
conjunction
joins together single words or groups of words in a sentence
interjection
expresses strong feeling or emotion can be a single word or phrase
