Lexical Storage And Lexical Access (A) Flashcards
Are words stored in the mind independently
no
When accessing a word we will use…..&….. to access it?
meaning and form
The more information we receive about form/meaning of a word, the more we can narrow down the options?
True
Connectionism models itself upon
the way in which the brain operates by transferring signals across multiple neural connections.
Who has a connectionist view?
McClelland et al 1986
When a connection is used more, it becomes stronger, when it is used less, it becomes weaker, for example?
Fish and chips
salt and pepper
scared and afraid
what is frequency?
The words that we use most are the ones that are easier for us to retrieve. This is because the connections to them are more often used.
What is collocation?
Words that are closely connected and as a result we retrieve them together, for example, ‘heavy smoker’
What is activation?
when we hear a word, activation triggers off a reaction which ‘lights up’ words that have close connections and then as a result are readily available for us to use and retrieve quicker. eg. doctor would activate nurse.
Is activation automatic?
Yes
Does activation decay quickly?
Yes
What does priming do?
e.g. ‘camel’ primes, hump, deser and sand
