What is communication>
Any means by which two (or more) individuals exchange information.
Paralinguistic techniques?
Non verbal communication such as hand signals, facial expressions, body language, nods, smiles and winks etc.
Non-Linguistic communication that do involve vocalisation? (5)
1- Grunts 2- Groans 3- Snorts 4- Sighs 5- Whimpers
Arbitrariness?
No resemblance between the language signal and the thing it represents.
Displacement?
Being able to communicate about things that are physically and temporarily removed from us.
Productivity?
We can use language in novel ways and be creative with it.
Discreteness?
Language signals are distinct
Semanticity?
Specific signals can be matched with specific meanings
Duality of Patterning?
Discrete parts of language can be recombined in a systematic way to create new forms.
Do can….?
Dogs can learn to associate ‘food’ or ‘walk’ with particular behaviours
Honey bees….?
Dance to indicate where a source of nectar is (Von Frisch 1954)
