Q

weakness of research method

A

a weakness of using a quasi experiment is the introduction of extraneous variables. this is because although there is standardised procedures such as all ps receiving the both the same detailed instruction sheet and on site training - because the study was conducted in a naturalistic environment, there will be extraneous variables that wont be able to be controlled due to the nature of the setting.

Q

weakness of data collected

A

a weakness of collecting quantitative data is the lack of depth and detail. this is because the results of who helped the person who dropped the pen, a person with an injured leg dropping magazines, and a blind person crossing the street is only in numerical form. this means that the researcher will have no explanation as to why people chose to help or not.

Q

ethics

A

one way the study was unethical is through the ethical guideline of deception. this is because they were deceived into thinking that someone had an injured leg and someone was blind all to see whether they would help the person or not - they weren’t told afterwards that the people were only actors and they were in perfect health.

Q

validity

A

high ecological validity. this is because the study into helping behaviour was conducted in a naturalistic environment of 23 cities - helping people around your city is seen as a normal task and is generally done outside of the study which will make the findings more generalisable.

Q

sampling bias

A

no sampling bias. this is because the ps were chosen randomly through opportunity sampling, meaning that the sample is more likely to be representative to the helping behaviour of the specified city, as every 1 in many people were chosen to be observed

Q

ethnocentrism

A

not ethnocentric. this is because it takes place in 23 different cities which means that the helping behaviour of people can be measured in cities that have an individualistic perspective as well as cities that may have a collectivist perspective - a clear relationship between the perspectives and the rate of helping behaviour can be seen.
