Levels of Structural Organization Flashcards
Atoms
Tiny building blocks of matter
Cells
The smallest unit of all living things.
Organ
A structure composed of two or more types of tissue that preforms a bodily function.
Tissues
Groups of similar cells that have a common function.
Organ System
Group of organs that come together and preform a bodily function.
Integumentary System
The external covering of the body, or the skin that waterproofs the body and cushions and protects the deeper tissues from injury.
Skeletal System
It consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints. It supports the body and provides a framework that the skeletal muscles can use to cause movement.
Muscular System
It helps the body move by contracting and shortening.
Nervous System
The body’s fast acting control system that consists of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors.
Endocrine System
Controls body activities by producing chemical molecules called hormones and releases them into the blood to travel to distant target organs,
Digestive System
A tube running through the body from mouth to anus used to break down food and deliver the products to the blood.
Urinary System
Removes the waste from the blood and flushes them from the body in urine.
Cardiovascular System
Using blood as the transporting fluid, it carries oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other substances to and from the tissue cells where exchanges are made.
Reproductive system
Exists to produce offspring
Respiratory System
Keeps the body supplied with oxygen and to remove carbon dioxide. Consists of the nasal passages, pharynx, and larynx.
