Levels of organisation Flashcards
Tissue
A tissue is a group of cells with similar structures, working together to perform a shared function
Organ
An organ is a group of tissues working together to perform specific functions
Organ system
An organ system is a group of organs with related functions, working together to make the body go!
How does the structure of a red blood cell enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Red blood cells carry oxygen)
- No nucleus = more space for haemoglobin
- Very flexible = can squeeze through the narrowest of blood vessels
How does the structure of a root hair cell enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Root hair cells absorb minerals and water from soil)
- Long extenstion = increases the surface area for absorption
How does the structure of a ciliated cell enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Ciliated cells move mucus in the trachea and bronchi)
- Layers of tiny hairs = move and push mucus around
How does the structure of a xylem vessel enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Xylem vessels are used in conduction and support)
- No cytoplasm = the water can pass freely
- No end wall = many cells can form a continuous tube
- Walls strengthened with waterproof substance lignin
How does the structure of a nerve cell enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Nerve cells conduct nerve impulses)
- Fatty sheath = Gives electrical insulation
- Many-branched ending = can connect with many other cells
How does the structure of a palisade mesophyll cell enable it to perform it’s functions as well as it can?
(Palisade mesophyll cell )
- Densely packed cells = Allows absorption of the maximum amount of light energy
