Features of organisms Flashcards
What are the features in cells of living organisms?
Cytoplasm, cell membrane, DNA (as genetic material) ribosomes (for protein synthesis) and enzymes (involved in respiration)
What are the five kingdoms?
Animal, Plant, Fungus, Prokaryote, and Protoctist
What are the 5 main groups of vertebrates?
Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish
What are the 4 main groups of arthropods?
Myriapods, insects, arachnids, and crustaceans
What are the main features of viruses?
Genetic material - may be DNA or RNA, but always a single strand
Protein coat - protects the single stand of nucleic acid. Made of many subunits.
List the main features used to place all organisms into one of the five kingdoms: Animal, Plant, Fungus, Prokaryote, Protoctist.
Animal - Heterotrophs that feed by chemical and mechanical digestion.
Plant - Not heterotrophs (are autotrophs)
Fungus - Heterotrophs that have cell walls and feed by external digestion
Prokaryote - Has no cells with definite nucleuses
Protoctist - Is a single celled organism
