Levels Of Measurement Flashcards
Nominal data?
Data as totals of Named categories that are unrelated.
Eg) saying ‘yes’ or ‘No’
Closed questions generate nominal data
Ordinal Data?
Data as points on a scale are in order.
Eg)worst to best -size of each increase doesn’t have to be equal
Interval data ?
Scores on a linear scale- points increase in value.
Eg; measure of intelligence or personality
Equal intervals between the points
Strengths of nominal data
+Easy to generate from closed questions-Large amount collected quickly-Reliable
+Quick to find mode to assess central tendency
Weaknesses of nominal data
- Without linear scale- parts unable to express degrees of response
- Medians and means can’t be used to asses central tendency
Strengths of ordinal data
+More information than nominal-Indicates relative values rather than just totals
+easy to generate from likert and rating scales
+median and mode can be used to assess central tendency
Weaknesses of ordinal data
- Gaps between points are relative so comparisons may be invalid as they may interpret the scale differently
- Mean can’t be used as size of each increase doesn’t have to be equal
Strengths of interval data
+Points are of equal value-directly comparable-more information
+Easy to generate form closed questions
+linear scale with equal gaps between points-mean,median,mode used
Weaknesses of interval data
-Interval scale that’s not scientific have no absolute baseline to the scale so scoring zero may not mean that parts doesn’t demonstrate that variable at all, merely that the scale doesn’t measure it
