Q

A

research

On’yomi

きゅう

Kun’yomi

きわ.める

meaning:

You’ve already dug nine holes. You’re doing this for your research which requires you to unbury bodies and take them back to your laboratory.

HINTS

What kind of research is this? Come up with something disgusting or ridiculous to help you to remember the meaning of this kanji.

reading:

You dig up the ninth hole. You think you’ve found what you’re looking for. Your research could finally be complete… but instead, you find the cutest (きゅう) animal in the world (what is your cutest animal?). It jumps out of the hole and gives you super adorable eyes.

HINTS

D’awwwww. Go ahead and remember this animal that you use – we’ll use it later with other words that have きゅう as the on’yomi.

Q

A

support

On’yomi

Kun’yomi

ささ.える

meaning:

The hard part about learning this kanji is that the radical looks the same but doesn’t have the same meaning. So, let’s make a story. The frog was all alone (just like in this kanji). Nobody else was there to help him. He had to support the weight of the building to make sure it didn’t fall on the elementary school.

HINTS

When you think “frog” you have to automatically think about this story. Embellish and add to it if you want. Make it more ridiculous. Make it more vivid. Whatever you need to do to remember that Frog = support.

reading:

To remember the reading し, we use the name Charlie “Sheen.” - Remember the frog from when you learned that this kanji means support? He’s holding up an entire building to keep the children safe. Just when you think he’s going to succeed, Charlie Sheen jumps on the building, pushing it down until it crushes the frog. He laughs maniacally as he runs off.

HINTS

Make sure you’re rooting for the frog! He’s trying to support everything by himself, after all. True underdog story. Then, feel horrified when Sheen makes his appearance, ruining everything the frog ever worked for.

Q

A

dwelling, reside, dwell

On’yomi

じゅう

Kun’yomi

す.む

meaning:

The leader, of course, is a master at something. He’s the best of the best, but because he’s so good, nobody can find him. Everyone wants to know where he lives. Because of that, you’re searching for his dwelling.

HINTS

Think about what this leader is a master in. Come up with something crazy but also something that interests you. Also make yourself believe that you want to know where his dwelling is (aka where he lives) more than anything else in the world. Where is his dwelling?

reading:

You are lucky. You finally find the dwelling of this leader master, and it’s not at all what you expected. He lives in a Jewish (じゅう) synagogue. It’s quite splendid, too.

HINTS

Be sure to imagine this place totally over the top. Your master leader is living in a small dorm room somewhere in the basement, which also surprises you.

Q

A

forest, woods

Kun’yomi

もり

meaning:

This kanji is just the tree radical three times. Just based off this, you should be able to figure it out. This kanji means “forest.”

HINTS

Makes sense, because a bunch of individual trees is what makes up a forest!

reading:

One tree? No. Two trees? Not enough. I want more (もり) trees, please!

HINTS

Keep repeating this pattern over and over, continually focusing in on how you need “more” trees to make this forest. For some reason the person working with you only goes up by one at a time, though, so you have to say it a lot (it’ll help you to remember, anyways!).

versus

On’yomi

たい

meaning:

You have this doll and you need to get a measurement of it. But, you have to get a measurement faster than your opponent. It’s you versus that crazy lady over there.

HINTS

Imagine something like an advertisement for a cage match showing. The part that stands out big time is the word “Vs.” in the center, between your faces. Also note how ridiculous this battle is. You’re measuring dolls…

reading:

Why are you measuring dolls versus this crazy lady? It’s because you need to know how big to make the tie that you’ll be putting on it.

HINTS

Stick a little tie on that doll of yours. Is it pretty looking? Did you measure right? How is it versus your opponent’s?

buddy

On’yomi

くん

Kun’yomi

きみ

meaning:

A wolverine is going down a slide into your mouth. Why is he going into your mouth, though? You’re opening it really wide, because you’re screaming “BUDDY!!! You’re so excited to see your wolverine buddy-pal again. You thought he was dead.

HINTS

Make sure you feel super happy. Even yell “Buddy” out loud while imagining this wolverine coming at you, if you’re not in a quiet-zone.

reading:

As you’re about to embrace your buddy wolverine, a raccoon tackles the wolverine off the slide, preventing your mouth embrace.

HINTS

“RaCCOON!” you yell. “THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. Get out of here.” Feel some hate for the raccoon. He ruined everything.

throw

On’yomi

とう

Kun’yomi

meaning:

You’re hitting Ikea furniture with your nailbat, busting it apart. But, this isn’t fun enough, so you ask your friend to start throwing it at you so you can hit it in the air.

HINTS

Feel the heaviness of the things you’re hitting. It probably hurts your hands and arms just because of the mass of the items being thrown at you. Also wonder how your friend got so strong. He’s able to throw this furniture as if it were nothing!

reading:

Then an accident happens. Your friend throws a drawer set at you, and you smash it to bits… but, the drawer was full of nails (な) that fly out and hit you in the face.

HINTS

Feel all the nails hitting you. There’s so many of them and you try to pull them out. Why did your friend throw that ikea furniture at you?

service, duty

On’yomi

やく

meaning:

You’re loitering around in Ikea, just waiting for someone to help you. What’s up with this terribleservice? It’s their duty to serve and they’re failing terribly.

HINTS

While you’re at it, imagine yourself writing a review about this Ikea on Yelp (or some other review site). Make the focus of this imaginary review be about the terrible service. Go ahead and make up your own story about how bad the service was, too.

reading:

Why are you getting such bad service from people who supposedly have great service as theirduty? It turns out the employees are all standing around just going “yak (やく) yak yak yak yak” (that’s the sound of people talking, by the way).

HINTS

Go ahead and mock these employees by saying “yak yak yak” over their talking. Feel a bit upset about this as well.

sharpen

On’yomi

けん

meaning:

You’ve found yourself a stone lantern. You need a quick way to sharpen your blade so you use it, then catch your sword on fire. Time to go fight again!

HINTS

Try to feel the rush of the situation. People are chasing you to cut you down, but your blade is too dull. So, you sharpen it quickly on something normal, like a stone lantern, then rush back into the fight.

reading:

When you’ve sharpened your sword, you turn around to do battle. What are you fighting? Several giant ken (けん) dolls.

HINTS

Imagine yourself doing battle with these human-sized dolls. They’re quite good at fighting, despite being made out of plastic. What gives?

Q

buy

On’yomi

ばい

Kun’yomi

meaning:

Sauron is looking at some clams to buy.

HINTS

Have him go through various questions. “How much are these?” “Can you go lower on your prices? I Have a lot of orcs to feed.” “Are these ones on sale?” etc. Always make it focused on the buying, though.

reading:

Some how Sauron goes from trying to buy clams to buying an entire car (か). He drives away in it, forgetting about the clams. Come up with a story about how he ended up buying this car from the clam salesman. Should be ridiculous to help you to remember that the kun’yomi reading for this kanji is か.

HINTS

The on’yomi for this kanji (which you’re not learning with the mnemonic, because it’s not as common) just sounds like the word “buy,” which makes it pretty easy to remember later on, when you need to.

reading:

You are looking at a horse. It’s looking at you. You try making horse noises at it, to get a reaction. Instead of reacting with a normal horse noise, it just makes sheep noises: “Baaa,” (ば) it says. “Baaaaa.”

HINTS

Feel the shock of this. It sounds just like a sheep, it’s strange.

drawing, painting

On’yomi

meaning:

Using just thread meeting the paper (with a little ink on the end) you create a masterpiece of adrawing (or a painting).

HINTS

It’s unbelievable the kind of drawing you’re able to draw with just the tip of a thread. So much detail. So artistic. If it helps, imagine that you drew the Mona Lisa, better than the original, only using this floppy thread tool.

reading:

You tell someone that you drew this drawing only using a a thread. Their response? “EH?!?!?” (え)

HINTS

Tell a few more people how you drew this. Have them all do the same “Eh!!??” reaction.

comfort, ease, pleasure

On’yomi

がく, らく

Kun’yomi

たの.しい

meaning:

The white ice tree is a magical tree. When you eat its ice flowers it gives you incredible amounts of comfort, ease, and pleasure.

HINTS

Imagine yourself picking the white ice flowers off the tree. Then, put it in your mouth. Make it taste comforting… It puts you at ease. Then, swallow it. Feel your head go nuts with comfort. This is the greatest drug in the world when it comes to comfort. So much pleasure!

reading:

You want more of this, You gather as much as you can, and create an entire rack (らく) at your store with this tree. You sell out immediately, and have to refill your rack.

HINTS

Imagine setting up the rack. Make it look beautiful. Shift around the flowers. Fill up the entire rack. Of course, your focus should be on the rack portion.

On’yomi

Kun’yomi

はな.す

meaning:

When you say something with your tongue you’re obviously talking.

HINTS

The logic of this one is almost too good, so don’t let that fool you!

reading:

What (わ) are you talking about? You’re talking about walruses.

HINTS

Or, if you’d like, you can come up with some other “wa” starting word to use to think about what you’re talking about. Just be sure to actually imagine yourself talking about that thing.

Q

cloud

Kun’yomi

くも

meaning:

What are rain boobs? They’re things that create, produce, and emit rain. I would say those things are the big fluffy things in the sky, also known as clouds.

HINTS

Makes sense, if you think about it. Boobs produce milk, clouds produce rain! Kind of a weird comparison, admittedly, but it’ll probably help you to remember this kanji pretty well!

reading:

Let’s imagine something besides rain coming out of these clouds though. Imagine a cool mom (くも) falling through the sky towards the earth (or a lot of them). They’re all doing things that cool moms do.

HINTS

Such a strange mnemonic, but くも doesn’t lend itself well to mnemonics. Come up with cool things that the cool moms are doing while they fly towards the earth from their clouds. Depending on you, those things will be different, so I want you to make something up here that will help you to remember that these are cool moms (and not anything else!).

Q

A

count, number, amount

On’yomi

すう

Kun’yomi

かぞ.える, か.ず

meaning:

In the winter, the woman has to go through all the rice and count each individual grain. When you’ve counted all of them, you’ll have an amount / number so that you can split them up accordingly.

HINTS

She has to count each grain out in order to divvy up the supply to last through the winter. Imagine yourself getting just a few grains today for food. It’s not a good time for you guys :(

reading:

Why are you so low on rice? It’s because someone sued your farm and took everything you owned. So, you had barely enough rice (or not enough).

HINTS

Come up with a story about why your farm got sued for everything. Go to the court case. Listen to the judge come up with your verdict. Be angry. This has ruined everything.

17
Q

A

place

On’yomi

しょ

Kun’yomi

ところ

meaning:

You’re taking an axe to a door. You’re absolutely crazy. “I HATE THIS PLACE!!” you keep yelling as you smash in the door.

HINTS

Why do you hate this place, in particular? Come up with a great reason why to help you to remember this very broad kanji meaning.

reading:

You finally break through the door and jump in. Inside is a great circus show (しょ). There are elephants, tightrope walkers, bears on unicycles, and more! The greatest show on earth, but why is it here at this place?

HINTS

Come up with a weird reason as to why the circus is at this place you hate so much. Why did you come here with your axe? Does it have something to do with the circus show?

18
Q

A

electricity

On’yomi

でん

Meaning Mnemonic

You’re standing in the middle of a rice paddy in the rain with an umbrella. You’re standing here because there’s nothing else that’s very tall around you. You want to get hit by electricity (aka lightning) to show that it exists.

HINTS

Get hit by the electricity. How does it feel?

Reading Mnemonic

After the electricity hits you, you feel your face. In it is a huge dent.

HINTS

Feel the indent in your face. It doesn’t hurt, strangely, but it is pretty huge. Panic about this dent a bit.

19
Q

A

suit, join

On’yomi

ごう

Kun’yomi

Meaning Mnemonic

The radical suit and the kanji suit are exactly the same! This kanji can also mean join which makes sense. When something suits you well, like a hat or something, it joins together with you quite well too. Join me, my hat! You suit my head well.

HINTS

Just remember that this “suit” means “to suit you” - not the thing you wear, okay!

Reading Mnemonic

You wear the hat you found out around the town (remember the strange hat with a mouth on it from when you learned the radical 合?). You think it suits you really well, but nobody else agrees. They start screaming. ああああああああ!

HINTS

Imagine little あ characters coming out of their mouths while they scream to hit home the point that they’re screaming あ and not something else.

20
Q

A

anti

On’yomi

はん

Meaning Mnemonic

The stool is in the cliff. If someone has a stool deep inside a cliff, they are most likely pretty antisociety, hiding away like that.

HINTS

Imagine someone who looks super antisocial (and a little feral). Ask them why they’re sitting on this stool inside a cliff… they reply because they hate people. They are anti people!

Reading Mnemonic

Turns out, when you go to this guy and pull off his beard, he’s Han (はん) Solo, the anti-hero from Star Wars! What is Han doing here, so hidden away? He’s obviously hiding from Jabba because he doesn’t want to get frozen in carbonite again.

HINTS

Make sure you get to the point where you pull this anti-social guy’s beard off, to reveal Han Solo beneath. Be surprised… not just because he’s Han Solo, but because he’s real, too! Maybe you can yell out “Han! Your people need you!”

21
Q

A

interval, interval of time, time interval

On’yomi

かん

Kun’yomi

あいだ, ま

Meaning Mnemonic

Think of a gate that the sun has to go through every time it revolves around in the sky (I know, the sun doesn’t move, but let’s pretend it’s ancient China, okay?). Someone at the gate checks the time, and makes sure the interval is correct, then waves it through the gate for another circling, where it creates its next interval of time.

HINTS

“Interval” is a weird word to remember, but just think of the sun going around the earth and through the gate just like clockwork. Every 24 hours it passes through the gate, and each interval is exactly the same.

Reading Mnemonic

The interval is perfect… at least, until now. Genghis Khan and his Mongol horde come down on the gate and destroy it, delaying the sun by several hours. Now the interval is all messed up due to the Khans. Time to build a great wall, or something, to protect.

HINTS

It’s not too out there to assume a Khan attacked something Chinese (remember, we’re pretending this interval sun gate is Chinese!). That’s what Genghis, Kublai, and all the other Khans were known for, after all - attacks on China!

22
Q

A

answer, response, reply

Kun’yomi

こた

Meaning Mnemonic

“Does the bamboo shirt suit me?” you ask… but nobody will answer.

HINTS

Shout “PLEASE ANSWER ME!” a few times to get the idea of “answer” in your head. What you really want is an answer, whether it’s bad or good, but nobody’s willing to say anything because you look so terrible.

Reading Mnemonic

So, instead of a shirt now, you try something else. Maybe a coat (こた) will get you an answer.

HINTS

You put on this weird bamboo coat. Smell it and feel the texture. How is it? Probably a bit bulky.

23
Q

A

number in a series, turn, ordinal number

On’yomi

ばん

Meaning Mnemonic

You have to sickle the rice paddy today because it’s your turn. This kanji also meansnumber in a series, which is a lot like a turn. For example, you’re number 3, so your turn will be number 3.

HINTS

Go through in your mind the system your farm / village uses for deciding who has to sickle on any given day. It rotates, and it’s a turn-based system. So, do you all stand in a line? Is there a calendar? Come up with something interesting, focusing on your turn in the process you come up with.

It will be helpful to remember both the “number in a series” and “turn” meanings for the vocab coming up in the future.

Reading Mnemonic

This turn-based rice sickle system is a contest as well! But, you are disappointed to find out that you have been banned from the game because of the performance enhancing steroids you’ve been taking.

HINTS

Try to feel disappointed by this. Strange thing to feel disappointed by, but you were a great sickler. You were going to win the great prize, too (come up with something huge!), but now you’re banned for the season.

24
Q

A

decide, decision

On’yomi

けつ

Kun’yomi

き.める

Meaning Mnemonic

You have at your disposal a tsunami and a hook to assassinate this person. Which weapon will you choose. Decide now!

HINTS

Have trouble with the decision. Which one? Tsunami will be big and cool, but a hook will be more discreet. How can you decide? Can you think of a neat way to decide this, like Two-Face on Batman?

Reading Mnemonic

To remember the reading けつ we always use the word “catsup.”

You finally decide. You’re going to go with the tsunami… but not just any tsunami. You’ll kill him with a tsunami of catsup (けつ).

HINTS

Get everything ready to take your target down. How will you plan this? Where will you put it? Go ahead and watch your plan unfurl, too.

25
Q

A

medicine

On’yomi

Meaning Mnemonic

You’re in a cage and you’ve been shot by an arrow. Obviously things are looking pretty bad. You need some medicine if you hope to live.

HINTS

More specifically, antibiotics. Your wound is festering pretty badly.

Reading Mnemonic

When we need to remember the sound い we use the word “Eagle.”

You need your medicine really bad. Then, you look up. There’s an eagle flying overhead. He has a package. It’s medicine! You’re saved!

HINTS

Or, so you think. He just keeps circling and circling. Feel some hate for the eagle. Why isn’t he dropping the medicine? You don’t have long to live!

26
Q

A

bureau, department

On’yomi

きょく

Meaning Mnemonic

There’s your nation’s flag on top of the cloaked mouth. Why would there be a flag on this cloaked mouth? Because it’s the symbol for the “Bureau of Secret Things.”

HINTS

The cloaked mouth represents how this bureau never talks about their secrets. The flag represents your country. Think about all the cool secret things the Bureau of Secret Things must have. Aliens, maybe?

Reading Mnemonic

The best bit of secret tech they have is the cloaking device. It can cloak you (きょく) with the press of a button.

HINTS

Now, this mnemonic isn’t perfectly close, but the goal is to get you close enough in your brain so that you can remember きょく later. If you can get to CLOAK YOU, then you can get to きょく much easier than just trying to get there from scratch. So, imagine yourself getting cloaked. What would you do with this power?

27
Q

A

somebody, someone, body

On’yomi

しん

Kun’yomi

Meaning Mnemonic

The self radical is a bit modified, with things sticking out, but that’s because it’s falling down a slide.

Sure, it’s yourself who’s tumbling down the slide… at least that’s how it feels to you. Who are you? What are you? All you know is you’re somebody, but you don’t know who that somebody is.

HINTS

Apparently, you’re having some kind of internal crisis. Come up with a rough one and you’ll remember this kanji better.

Reading Mnemonic

You’re falling down this metaphorical slide… And then you hit something… and you hit it really hard. It’s your metaphorical shin (しん). You split it in half and it’s at a right angle. The pain is incredible (shins have a lot of nerves!). It may have been broken, and you may not be able to walk correctly again… metaphorically speaking, that is.

HINTS

Just make the tumble and shin hit as painful as possible in your imagination and you’ll surely remember this kanji’s on’yomi.

28
Q

A

help

On’yomi

じょ

Kun’yomi

たす.ける

Meaning Mnemonic

The eye is a little squished at the bottom. That’s because you’re squeezing your eyes together to unlock a power you have.

You have a power and it’s in your eyes. When you squeeze one of your eyes (without closing it, just like the radical) it shoots out a laser beam. What do you do with this power? Of course you helpinnocent people, because you’re a good person, right?

HINTS

Imagine someone getting robbed. You jump in as they’re yelling “HELP, HELP!” and squeeze your eye kinda-closed. A laser shoots out and blasts the bad guy apart. You’re awesome, but also a murderer now. Whoops.

Reading Mnemonic

You have another weapon that you use to help people with too. It’s a jo (じょ) fighting stick.

HINTS

Imagine yourself using both of these things in tandem. Maybe you fly down on your enemy, shooting lasers out of your eyes. Then, you slam the jo into the bad-guy’s face. What a nice one-two punch.

29
Q

A

morning

On’yomi

ちょう

Kun’yomi

あさ

Meaning Mnemonic

There’s a cross on both sides of the sun, with the moon off to one side. That’s because the religious folk are all about the morning (all those early church sessions!), and everyone else is all about the night (the moon).

HINTS

Just think about religious people waking up super early to do their rituals. That’s why the crosses are on the sun. That’s why they’re associated with the morning.

Reading Mnemonic

But, they’re kind of grumpy because they have to wake up early in the morning. So, they’re constantly cutting each other off, pushing each other, and being jerks. Imagine all of these people yelling back and forth at each other: “You ass!” (あさ) a ridiculous amount, then all suddenly becoming quiet when they sit down in the church.

HINTS

It might help if you think about them all being Italian too. At least when it comes to a stereotypical Italian accent, they’d say something like “you ass-a hole-a!” If you’re Italian, this is probably absolutely how you don’t sound.

30
Q

A

location, place

On’yomi

じょう

Kun’yomi

Meaning Mnemonic

There is a great gravity at this grave. It pulls us in towards it… It obviously wants us to go to a specific location (aka the location where it is).

HINTS

This is a really, really general kanji meaning which makes it harder to remember via a mnemonic. Spend a few extra seconds trying to sort this one out in your head before moving on.

Reading Mnemonic

The location you’re being pulled towards is the secret sheep graveyard. You can hear the “Baa (ば) baa baaaaaa!” noises more clearly the closer you get. It’s scary!

HINTS

The reading for this kanji is actually quite difficult to pinpoint. It uses both on’yomi and kun’yomi readings quite often, and there’s no real good rules to figure out when to do which. The kun’yomi reading seems slightly more common, though, which is why we’re going with that one. You will, however, have to work a little bit when you get to this kanji’s vocab. Just a warning!

31
Q

A

someone, somebody

On’yomi

しゃ

Kun’yomi

もの

Meaning Mnemonic

A coffin has been left out in the sun for too long. When dead bodies are out in the sun like this, they really begin to decompose. You are wondering who this person is, though. You can’t tell because it’s fallen apart too much. You look on the coffin. There’s a label, but it only says “someone.”

HINTS

Smell the stench of the decomposing body. Also, feel really curious as to who this person is. It came from somewhere that gives you a reason to believe it’s someone you know. Then, feel the disappointment as you read the label that says “someone” instead of an actual name. “Someone,” you repeat. “Someone.”

Reading Mnemonic

To remember the sound しゃ we use “shaman.”

It’s time you open the coffin and check. Maybe there’s more answers in there. There’s no way this person could just be “someone.” You lift the lid, and sure enough, you’re able to figure out who it is. It’s a shaman (しゃ), dressed in full shaman garb.

HINTS

How strange that a shaman was delivered to you this way! Come up with a story explaining why this shaman’s body is here at your door, rotting in the sun. Make it ridiculous and interesting so you remember it.

32
Q

A

road, street, path, way

On’yomi

どう

Kun’yomi

みち

Meaning Mnemonic

At the neck end of the water slide, it becomes a full on road.

HINTS

Imagine yourself going down a water slide, getting to the neck of it (that’s the end). It shoots you out onto pavement where you keep on sliding, except now you’re surrounded by terrifying trucks and vehicles. You slide around, avoiding getting hit. It’s so strange that you’re even on a road in the first place, actually.

Reading Mnemonic

To remember the reading どう we use the word “doughnut”.

You’re going so fast on this road that you don’t see the giant doughnut (どう) until the last minute. You crash into it, and both you and the doughnut go tumbling down.

HINTS

Be sure to feel the last minute panic as you see the giant doughnut in the middle of the road. How did it get here? Also feel, smell, and taste the doughnut as you’re tumbling along, crashing. Maybe steal a few bites while you’re at it. Mmm, doughnuts.
