Leukocytes; Innate Immunity - Second Line Defenses Flashcards
Name all the granulocytes
Neutrophils. Basophils, mast cells. Eosinophils
What are leukocytes
White blood cells
What color does neutrophils stain
Very light purple
What does the neutrophil look like
You have to look for the nucleus and its multi lobes
What color does basophils and mast cells stain
Very light purple but basophils are in the blood and mast cells are in the tissues
What color do eosinophils stain
Red
What are the agranulocytes
Lymphocytes and monocytes
Define agranulocytes
No granuols and the cytoplasmic are clear
What do lymphocytes turn into
The natural killer (NK) cells
Describe the natural killer cells
The nucleus is so huge, it squishes the cytoplasm off to one side and the nucleus fills the cell and the cytoplasm has a crescent moon affect
Name the cells that help the monocytes
Macrophages and dendritic cells
Describe a lymphocyte
It’s it’s the smallest white blood cells
Describe monocytes
It’s the biggest white blood cells and have a horse shoe shaped nucleus and is bilobed. They exist in the blood and can differentiate into macrophages and dendritic cells
Describe macrophages
Resident macrophages are all over your body and are called in as needed
Describe dendritic cells
They’re scattered throughout the body and they set up the adaptive immune system
