How long what the battle of the Atlantic?
It was on for the whole length if the war (1939-1945)
What was the battle about?
the Germans used a balanced attack against Allied shipping: planes, mines and warships, as well as U-boats but they soon relied on mainly U-boats. The U-boats started to ‘hunt’ in groups, known as wolf packs, which made it easier for them to sink ships.
What was the convoy system?
From the spring of 1941 the British used a convoy system. Ships in convoys
were escorted and protected by 5 warships.
What did the Radars do?
The convoy escorts began to use radar. This helped them find U-boats and
sink them or tell aircraft pilots where to find them.
How many U-boats were sunk?
Over 750 U-boats were sunk
What was ULTRA?
ULTRA allowed the British to decode German messages. This meant that the
Allies knew where the submarines were.
How many allied boats were sunk and remade?
the Germans sank 22 million tons of allied ships/boats however the allies built 42 million tons of new ships/boats
What did the USSR do? And when did they do it?
the USSR in June 1941 took most German planes to
the Eastern Front.

What was Operation Barbarossa?
Hitler wanted to defeat Communism, take over land in the USSR as living space for Germans, and to use the Soviet people as slave labour.

What policy did the Red army use?
The Red Army used a scorched earth policy, meaning that as they retreated they destroyed anything that might benefit the Germans – railways, buildings and crops
What were the Germans not prepared for?
The German army did not have proper boots or warm clothes – German soldiers often froze to death at their posts.
What battled during Operation Barbarossa was one the worst battles?
The battle for Stalingrad was one of the greatest and most horrible battles of the war.
