Co-rumination
Patterns of self-disclosure that involve an excessive focus on negative events and the continual re-hashing of problems
Obsessive focus on the negative.
Some friendships are structured around co-rumination
May cause greater emotional closeness, but increases negative affect and symptoms of anxiety and depression
Dating scripts
Standard culturally sanctioned behaviors that most dates follow
Ex: getting ready, dinner and movie, drinks, kissing at end of the evening, holding doors, etc.
Helpful so everyone knows how to act on dates, but not necessarily in the best interest of women
Heterosexism
The idea that heterosexuality is normal and other forms of sexuality are abnormal
Can lead to homophobia
Homophobia
Fear of gay and lesbian people or
Discriminatory behavior aimed at gay and lesbian people
Coming out
Act of disclosing one’s sexual orientation
Boston marriages
Romantic, committed, and caring relationships that do not include sexual activity
Not exclusive to lesbians
