Women
Due to several social influences
More acceptable for women to exhibit symptoms such as anxiety
Women are placed in social roles that may be in conflict and produce stress
Anorexia nervosa
Refusal to maintain a minimally healthy body weight
Body weight at least 15% below normal
Symptoms include brittle hair, dry yellowish skin, extra body hair, amenorrhea, anemia, electrolyte imbalances, low blood pressure
Strong and irrational fear of gaining weight
Often have distorted body images
2 main types of anorexia
Restricting type
Binge-eating/purging type
Restricting type anorexics
Lose weight by severely limiting the amount of food that they eat
Binge-eating/purging type anorexics
May eat slightly more food but then purge or compensate for this food by vomiting, using laxatives, or exercising excessively
bulimia nervosa
Characterized by bingeing and purging
Generally normal weight
Purging
The use of vomiting, laxatives, or water pills in an attempt to cancel out the calories eaten
Performed because it relieves the discomfort and overwhelming anxiety that occurs after a binge

Use purging to compensate for a binge
Non-purging type
Rely on methods such as periods of severe dieting or extreme exercise to make up for a binge
Minnesota Starvation Experiment
1945; 36 males went through 3 phases- 3200 cals per day, 6 months of 1800 calories per day, then more calories per day
Also engaged in strenuous exercise
Men lost about 25% of body weight, developed odd rituals around eating
Many gained weight quickly after the study
the thin ideal
The culturally propagated idea that thin bodies are most desirable.
Exposure to thin idea predicts risk for eating disorders
Normative discontent
Body dissatisfaction is so common in American women
Normal for women to dislike their bodies
