Baby blues
Period of mildly depressed mood after giving birth
Typically last a few days
Tearfulness, anxiety, and sadness
Postpartum depression
Symptoms of major depression disorder that begin within a month of giving birth
Profound sadness, feeling excessively guilty or worthless, loss of interest in previously enjoyed things, lack of energy or appetite, thoughts of death or suicide
More likely to affect first time mothers and if there is history of depression
More likely if little social support
Can be treated with psychotherapy and medication
Generally subsides within 6 months of giving birth
