Lesson 8 Correlations Flashcards
What are correlations?
Technique for analysing the strength of the RELATIONSHIP between two co-variables
What are co-variables?
Quantitative variables
Where is the data for a correlation obtained from?
Non-experimental source
E.g. survey
What is the strength of a correlation?
Between -1 and 1
What does ‘zero’ mean for a correlation coefficient?
No correlation
What is the correlation coefficient?
Strength of correlation
What are the advantages of correlations?
PIMESM
Predictions can be made about one variable based on knowledge of other
Investigate things that couldn’t be Manipulated Experimentally due to ethics
Allows establishment of Strength of relationship between two variables + Measure it precisely
What are the disadvantages of correlations?
CAECRCV
Cannot demonstrate cause and effect
Cannot detect Curvilinear Relationships
Confounding Variable may influence both
