How can external forces change a place?
Conflict may arise when people resist changes forces upon their place
-the redevelopment of areas of East London for the 2012 Olympic Games was not welcomes by everyone as the proposed housing estates, landfill sites and wind farms created tensions between stakeholders
Agents of change-Government policies
Regeneration schemes and financial incentives for industries such as subsidies, tax breaks and enterprise zones
-These can attract businesses to places and stimulate the multiplyer effect

In 2020, the World Bank was running 24 development projects in Haiti. Also have sustainable development goals.
-Post earthquake and reconstruction and reaction to COVID-19 led to varied success around the world
Agents of change-The impacts of international or global institutions
In 2019 Honda announced the closure of its Swindon factory to move production to China, Japan and USA and therefore anounced its closure of factories of production in Newport, South Wales.
-Job losses for employees in the supply chain led to uncertain future for the 380 acre factory site
Difference between meaning and representation
Meaning relates to individual or collective perceptions of place
-e.g “Sheffield, in my opinion, could just;y claim to be the ugliest town in the Old world”- George Orwell
Representation is how a place is portrayed or ‘seen in society’
-“Ghost town of unemployed, alcholics and drug addicts”
-both change over time and vary between people and communities
Past connections with Sheffield
- Steel used in WW2 for aircrafts, tanks, artillery as the city becomes target of german boming
- Deindustrialisation occurs due to competition from China
- Sheffield steel helped build Brooklyn Bridge
Present connections with Sheffield
- ‘New Era Square’ and links to China economically and socially- Chinese studentsin city centre, Chinese shops and restaurants
- Norweigan Bank invest in Lower Don Valley, one of main shareholders of Meadowhall Shopping centre

- Scandanavia-name is derived from Old-Norse “Wad” which means marshlands. Vikings could easily cross the river dearne
- Manchester and Sheffield-coal was transported to these cities
- Doncaster-The Woodhead Line was used to transport goods through the transpennine trail to Doncaster

- London and Leeds as the Dearne Valley Parkway connects Wath to London throigh the M1. Allows investment through the transportation of goods
- Global investment-many TNC’s have invested in the Dearne Valley, which shows that Wath is globally connected location. E.g Capita, Next, Costa, KFC.
