Types of data
A
- Quantitative data often comes in the form of numbers. It is objective and can be measured.
- Qualitative data is more opinion-based. It is subjective, and cannot be measured statistically.

A
- Combination of both is useful
-qualitative is more important in ‘changing places’

Quantitative data-Census Data
A
- Used to detail the social and economic characteristics of the population of the country for over 200 years.
-age and gender structure
-ethnicity
-levels of economic deprivation

Qualitative Data-Interviews
A
- Interviews can generate detailed insights about a person’s sense of place or perception of place.
- They are first-hand or direct reports of experiences, opinions and feelings.
- Interviewer bias may affect the responses of the interviewee by using leading questions.

Are maps qualitative or quantative?
A
- Is a cartographical source
- can be qualitatiove like OS maps but can change how we feel about a place
-maps have been previously unreliable due to religion as Jeruselum was always in middle

- The northern land mases look much bigger on the map than they are in reality
-not accurate, greenland looks tiny but its massive

Provenance defintion
A
- Used for a source’s ‘background’ – its nature, origin and purpose. It’s a key word to use when considering the context of a source.

A
- Census data, objective but dont describe sense of place

A
- Historical maps, topography maps, census data maps,
-qualitative data like level of happiness
-can be misleading like historical maps

A
- Paintings of art galleries, local films
-effective in conveying a sense of place
-can be altered, only show sense of place at a given time

-get lots of info from atricles and includes emotional ionterpretation of the area too
-done sometimes include the full picture

Evaluations of quantative data
A
- Objective, can be shown over time (Index of Multiple Deprivation)
- Doesnt explain anything-have to infer and data can be selective

Evaluations of qualitative data
A
- Subjective so provides descriptive and can be used to explain why
- But its open to bias so is less accurate and can be manipulated through falsified paintings
