What is Globalization?
The adaption of global ideas into locally palatable forms
How did Globalization start in ancient society?
Exchange of products and technologies, cultural beliefs, practices, and religions.
What is modern-day Globalization?
Colonialism has spread globalization through people (colonizers and slaves), products and technologies, and cultural beliefs, practices, and religions
What is Appadurai’s Five “Scapes”?
Ethnoscape, Technoscape, Ideoscape, Financescape, Mediascape
What is an Ethnoscape?
the flow of people across boundaries (ex. tourism, migration)
What is a Technoscape?
the flow of technology (ex. iPhone)
What is an Ideoscape?
The flow of ideas (ex. Missionaries)
What is a Financescape?
the flow of money across political borders (ex. mining wealth)
What is a Mediascape?
the flow of media across borders (ex. films and sports events)
What is Syncretism?
combining different beliefs into a new, harmonious whole, often as a response to colonialism or globalization
What is Fair Trade?
a set of agreements between producers and buyers to maintain living wages independent of the market
What are Pushes?
factors that make people leave sending communities
What is Migration?
Movement of individuals, families, or whole communities either within one country (e.g. rural to urban areas) or across national boundaries
What are Pulls?
Factors that make receiving communities “desirable” destinations (at least in appearance/rumors)
What is Transnationalism?
people’s lives may be lived across borders/significantly influenced by events across borders
