What is a meal/recipe?
ingredients, combinations, and preparations of food that hold cultural or personal meaning
What is a Foodway?
the cultural norms and attitudes surrounding food and eating
What is Economic Anthropology?
study of how humans obtain the material necessities: food, clothing, and shelter. Also, how people produce, exchange, and consume material objects.
What is the mode of exchange?
ways to integrate economic and social relations and distribute material goods
What are the modes of exchange?
reciprocity (generalized, balance, negative), redistribution, markets
What is Reciprocity?
transfer or exchange of goods between individuals or groups of relatively equal status
What is Generalized Reciprocity?
giving goods with no expectation of return or timing and is usually tied to socially/emotionally close people who are tied to social obligations
What is Balanced Reciprocity?
giving products with the expectation of roughly equal return and timing and usually has punishments if not followed and used to create and maintain social partnerships
What is Negative Reciprocity?
the attempt to get something for nothing and used by societies who cannot obtain goods by themselves
What is Redistribution?
the accumulation of goods or labor by a particular person or institution for dispersal at a later rate
What are Markets?
social institutions with prices or exchange equivalencies
