What is a State?
Large, diverse populations, defined geographic territory (borders) with high degrees of social stratification/ specialization, intensive agriculture, industrial subsistence, trade, and complex economies
Where is the Power in a State?
Political power is centralized in a government that has a monopoly over the legitimate use of force
What is the Authority and Legitimacy in a State?
Authority is based on culturally accepted institutions with heads of state and supporting positions and the legitimacy comes from the elites’ power (religion, elections, cultural values)
What is a Hegemony?
A dominant idea/ideology that shapes how people think
Why is warfare widespread?
Warfare has led to the acquisition of resources by taking control of adjacent populations and used to expand, defend, redefine territories and leadership
What society is usually unstable?
states/stratified societies
What is the difference between States and Nations?
A state is a coercive political institution and a nation is a group connected by language, territorial base, history, and political organization.
