Lesson 1 terms Flashcards
What is a Subsistence System?
the set of practices used by members of a society to acquire food i.e., “making a living”
What are the modes of subsistence?
the modes of subsistence are foraging, pastoralism, and agriculture (horticulture and globalized food production)
What is foraging?
procurement of wild plant and animal food resources available in the environment. ex. hunting, fishing, gathering, etc.
What is Pastoralism?
reliance on herds of domesticated livestock, with the livestock sometimes being moved several times a year (nomadic pastoralism)
What is Agriculture?

What is Horticulture?
relies on small gardens that move periodically, with shifting or “slash and burn” systems/ multicropping and intercropping
What is Smallholder/ Intensive Agriculture?
Greater input into crop management: irrigation, draft animals/mechanization, and fertilizer
What is Globalized Agriculture?
High yields but very high inputs of fossil fuels, pesticides/insecticides, fertilizer, genetically modified seeds, mechanization
