define food security
fs= access to affordable and nutritious supplies of food
steps can be taken to ensure this e.g. improving food production, reducing waste etc
what is irrigation? how does this benefit crops?
irrigation is the application of soil/water to plants, increases crop yields between 100-400%
what was the green revolution?
introduced in the 1960s- scheme to improve traditional framing systems through new food technology for LICs
BUT this didn’t work everywhere- not all tech suits all climates
what is the new green revolution?
introduced in the 2000s, transfer of seeds that grow in droughts and salty conditions to suit more climates (achieved through biotechnology)
BUT success has been uneven due to debate about GM crops
what is aquaculture and sustainable fishing? whats a positive/negative?
aquaculture= farming of the sea-> can harm natural ecosystems through water pollution
aeroponics + hydroponics= expensive but alternative if soil is poor/no soil

- 2012 3ns- Nigerians nourish Nigerians, use of improved seed varies, better irrigation->
food insecurity decreased, Niger’s GDP increased by 3% in 1 year
