Lesson 7: Bones of the Lower Limbs Flashcards
What bones form the pelvic girdle?
The hips bones (aka ossa coxae or pelvic bones)
What bones form the pelvis?
The pelvic girdle, sacrum, and coccyx
What is the function of the pelvic girdle?
To transmit the weight of the upper body to the lower limbs and to support and protect the pelvic organs
What are the parts that make up the hip bone?
Ilium, ischium, and pubis
What three bones ossify into a single bone and form three articulations?
Sacroiliac joint with the articular surface of the sacrum, the pubic symphysis with the pubic cartilage, and the hip joint with the head of the femur
What is the ilium?
The largest part of the hip bone; is expanded superiorly to form the fan-shaped ala and forms two-fifths of the acetabulum
What is the crest?
The superior border of the ilium that provides origin and insertion points for the abdominal muscles
What is the pubis?
Forms the smallest and most anterior part of the hip bone and articulates with the opposite bone at the pubic symphysis
What is the ischium?
Forms the lower, posterior part of the hip bone
What is the spine?
A posterior projection
What is the ischial tuberosity?
A large, roughened tuberosity on the posteroinferior surface of the ischium
What is the obturator foramen?
A foramen in the front of the pelvis; formed by the pubis and the ischium
What is the acetabulum?
A cup-shaped depression formed by the ilium, ischium, and pubis for articulation, through its horseshoe-shaped articular surface, with the femoral head
What does femur articulate with?
The pelvic bone, the proximal tibia, and the posterior surface of the patella
What are the parts of the femur?
Head, neck, greater trochanter, and lesser trochanter
