Lesson 6: Bones of the Upper Limbs Flashcards
What forms the pectoral girdle?
The clavicle and scapula, which lie anterior and posterior to the rib cage, respectively
The axial skeleton, also referred to as the shoulder girdle, by which the upper limb is attached to the body
Pectoral girdle
A a large, flat, triangular bone that lies obliquely on the back and side of the thorax.
Scapula
What does the scapula articulate with?
The acromial end of the clavicle and the head of the humerus (glenohumeral joint)
What are the parts of the scapula?
Acromion, coracoid process, glenoid fossa, infraspinous fossa, spine, subscapular fossa, supraspinous fossa
A slightly S-shaped bone that lies at the base of the neck, in front of the first rib.
Clavicle
What does the clavicle articulate with?
The acromion of the scapula and the manubrium of the sternum
What are the parts of the clavicle?
Sternal end and acromial end
A long bone in the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow
Humerus
What are the parts of the humerus?
The head, capitulum, trochlea, and olecranon fossa
What are the bones of the forearm?
Ulna and radius
What articulations are with the forearm?
Ulna and radius articulate with the humerus at the elbow and with the carpal bones at the wrist
The medial long bone of the forearm
Radius
What are the parts of the radius?
Head and styloid process
The lateral long bone of the forearm?
Ulna
What are the parts of the ulna?
Trochlear notch, olecranon, and styloid process
What consists of the hands of the bone?
Eight small, irregular carpal bones in the wrist, five metacarpal bones in the palm, three in the phalanges in the fingers, and two phalanges in the thumb
What do the carpal bones articulate with?
The distal end of the radius, the distal end of the ulna (via an articular disc), adjacent carpal bones, and the proximal ends of the metacarpals
What are the parts of the carpal bones?
Scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform, hamate, capitate, trapezoid, and trapezium
“So Long To Pinky. Here Comes The Thumb”
What are the five miniature long bones that support the palm of the hand?
Metacarpals
What are the articulations of the metacarpals?
Caropmetacarpal joints, intermetacarpal joints, and metacarpophalangeal joints
What are the parts of the metacarpals?
The base, head, and shaft
What are the 14 miniature long bones of the digits, three in each finger and two in the thumb?
Phalanges
What are the articulations of the phalanges?
The distal ends of the metacarpals and the adjacent phalanges in the same finger
What are the types of phalanges?
Proximal, middle, and distal
