Lesson 6- Enzymes Flashcards
Function
a living system controls its activity through enzymes, they are catalysts (guide and control chemical reactions), increase the rate of reaction, act only with substrate reactant, can be used over again, decrease the activation energy required for a reaction to occur
Regulation/Control
important for supply and demand, sensitive to environment conditions
Competitive inhibitor
bind to the active site of the enzyme and block the substrate
Non-competitive inhibitor
bind elsewhere on an enzyme and change the shape of the active site
Allosteric regulation
alternate between inactive and active shape, allosteric site are receptor sites on an enzyme that stimulates the activity of an enzyme
Allosteric activator
binds to an allosteric site and stabilizes the protein shape to keep all active sites available to their substances
Allosteric inhibitor
binds to an allosteric site and stablizes the inactive form of an enzyme
