Lesson 5- Proteins (pr-) Flashcards
Function
Structural functions, enzymes, aid in the transport of substances, chemical messengers (hormones)
Structure
amino acids joined together in chains called polypeptides
Amino acids
Carbon middle, amino group, carboxyl group, and r side chain. can be polar, non-polar, or electrically charged. bond together through a condensation reaction
Protein structure
complex-shaped based on the order amino acids are joined together. Primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary structures. a change in the shape is called denaturation and loses the ability to function
Primary structure
the order of the amino acids in a polypeptide (20 amino acids so many different variations)
Secondary structure
local folding of the polypeptide, hydrogen. bonds between amino acid backbones, a-helix and b-pleated sheet
Tertiary structure
the folding of secondary stuctures in polypeptide chain upon themselves, results in interactions between side chains (ionic, hydrogen, hydrophobic interactions, disulfide bridges)
Quaternary structure
when two or more polypeptide chains combine to forma. single pr- molecule, results in interactions between side chains
