Lesson 5- Aims and Hypotheses of Pilot Studies Flashcards
What is meant by an aim?
Statement about the purpose of the study and what it intends to find out
What is a hypothesis
A statement about the expected outcome of a study. The hypothesis should be OPERATIONALISED
What is a null hypothesis
This states that the IV will have NO effect on the DV
What is an alternative hypothesis
This predicts that the IV WILL have an affect on the DV
What is a directional hypothesis (one tailed)
States the DIRECTION the effect will appear in e.g chocolate will increase a persons mood
What is a non directional hypothesis (two tailed)
Does NOT state the direction of the effect will appear in
E.g smoking has an effect on health
What is a pilot study?
Small scale investigations conducted before research
What determines whether we use a directional or non-directional hypothesis?
if there has already been PREVIOUS research conducted in the field-> directional hypothesis
Why do use a directional hypothesis if there has been previous research conducted?
previous research will enable us to predict the direction the results are LIKELY to go in
