Lesson 14: Descriptive Statistics Flashcards
What are the measures of central tendency?
Mean
Median
Mode
What is the mean?
calculated by adding all the scores together and dividing it by the number of total scores
Advantage of mean
Most accurate measure as it takes into account ALL the scores
Disadvantage of mean
can be distored by a single EXTREME value in the set
What is the median
Ranking all the scores in order and taking the middle value
Advantage of median
UNAFFECTED by EXTREME scores
Disadvanatge of median
unrepresentative of data as not all scores are taken into account, data is not as sensitive as the MEAN
Mode?
most frequent value within the set
Advantage of the mode?
Mode is unaffected by extreme scores
Disadvantage of the mode?
tells us nothing about other scores in a data set
What are the TWO measures of dispersion?
Standard deviation
Range
What is the range?
Highest number in the set- Lowest number in the set (ADD 1)
e.g 1,2,3,4,5,6
6-1=5 (+1)
range =6
Advantage of range?
quick and easier to calculate in comparison to standard deviation
disadvantage of range?
can easily be distorted by extreme values
What is standard deviation?
the AVERAGE amount that each score DIFFERS from the MEAN
