Lesson 4- Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
Technique used for analysing the STRENGTH and DIRECTION of the RELATIONSHIP between two variables
What is a POSITIVE CORRELATION?
As one variable increases the other one will also increase
What is a negative correlation
As one variable increases the other variable decreases
What is the strength of a correlation referred to as?
Correlation coefficient
Advantages of correlations
- Allows strength of a relationship to be established
2.allows researchers to investigate things that could not be manipulated experimentally due to ethical or impractical reasons
Disadvantages of correlations
- Cause and effect cannot be established
- Correlation only measures LINEAR relationships
Difference between correlations and experiments
Experiments establish CAUSE AND EFFECT whereas correlations look for a RELATIONSHIP between co variables
