Lesson 4 Definitions Flashcards
What is a LAN?
a group of computers connected by cabling and one or more network switches that are all installed at a single geographical location.
any network where the nodes are within about 1-2km of one another can be thought of as “local”
What is a WLAN?
Network scope and type that uses wireless radio communications based on some variant of the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard series
What is a WAN? Wide area Network
Spans multiple geographic locations. A global network of networks.
What is a MAN? Metropolitan Area Network?
Can be used to mean a specific network type covering an area equivalent to a city or other municipality.
Could mean a company within multiple connected networks within the same metropolitan area—so larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN
What is a SAN? Storage Area Network?
Connected to what via what?
Network dedicated to provisioning storage resources, typically consisting of storage devices and servers connected to switches via host bus adapters.
What is a PAN? Personal Area Network
Refers to using wireless connectivity to connect to devices at a range of a few meters.
What is a transceiver port?
It’s how the physical connection is made from either Ethernet copper twisted pair cables or from fiber optics to the computer.
What is a MAC? Media Access Control
each Ethernet NIC port has a unique hardware / physical address.
What is a patch panel?
Used with what? (2)
type of distribution frame used with twisted pair cabling with IDC’s to terminate fixed cabling on one side and modular jacks to make cross-connections to other equipment on the other.
Hardware that contains ports and manage incoming and outgoing LAN cables.
Blank ports on one side and a termination point on the other
What is a hub?
Legacy network hardware device that was used to implement the 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T Ethernet cabling designs.
referred to as a “Star typology” because each end and system is cabled to a concentrator (the hub)
what is a concentrator?
the hub
star topology
What does half-duplex mean?
Computer can send or receive, but not at the same time
What is a switch?
An Intmediate system used to establish contention-free network segments at OSI layer 2 (Data Link)
What is PoE? Power over Ethernet?
(From what to what)
Supplying electrical power from a switch port ordinary data cablilng to a Powered Device
AKA
Specification allowing power to be supplied via switch ports and ordinary data cabling to devices such as VoIP handsets and wireless access points.
What is attenuation?
when a cable loses strength over long distances / ranges
What is a STP?
Shielded twisted pair
Copper twisted-pair cabling with screening and shielding elements for individual wire pairs and / or the whole cable to reduce interference
What is screened cable?
has one thing outer foil shield around all pairs.
What is fully shielded cabling?
has a braided outer screen and foil-shielded pairs
What is a Cat Specification?
It’s a particular twisted pair cable construction method for use within given Ethernet standards.
What is T568A/T568B
Twisted-Pair Termination pinouts
What is a crossover cable?
When you use T568A at one end and T568B at the other end.
What is a patch cord?
A type of flexible network cable typically terminated with RJ45 connectors.
What is a permanent Cable?
How are they terminated?
Type of solid network cable typically terminated to punch down blocks that’s run through wall and ceiling spaces
What is a cable stripper?
Tool for stripping cable jacket or wire insulation
What is a punchdown tool
Tool used to terminate solid twisted pair copper cables to an insulation displacement connector block
What is a crimper?
Tool used to join RJ form Factor connector to the ends of twisted pair patch cable
What is a cable tester?
Two part tool used to test successful termination of copper cable by attaching to each end of a cable and energizing each wire conductor in turn with an LED to indicate end-to-end connection
What is a cable tester?
Two part tool used to test successful termination of copper cable by attaching to each end of a cable and energizing each wire conductor in turn with an LED to indicate end-to-end connection
What is a toner probe?
Two-part tool used to identify one cable within a bundle by applying an audible signal
What is a loopback plug
A tool used to verify the integrity of a network interface port by checking that it can receive a signal generated by itself
What is a network tap?
Hardware device inserted into a cable run to copy frames for analysis
What is Plenum Cable?
Cable for use in building voids designed to be fire-resistant and to produce a minimal amount of smoke if burned
What is a plenum space?
A void in a building designed to carry HVAC systems.
What is OSP (outside plant cable)
Cable run on the external walls of a building or between two buildings
What are coaxial cables?
How are they categorized?
Media type using two separate conductors that share a common axis
categorized using Radio Grade RG specifications
What is a BSSID?
Basic Service Set ID
The MAC address of the Access Point’s or router used to connect to wifi
What is a frequency band?
Portion of the microwave radio frequency spectrum in which wireless products operate
What is a channel
a subdivision of frequency bands used by Wi-Fi products into smaller networks to operate at the same location without interfering with one another
What is a dual band?
an Access point r adapter that can support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz operation
What is Channel Bonding
capability to aggregate one or more adjacent wireless channels to increase bandwidth
What is MIMO
Multiple input multiple output
Use of multiple reception and transmission antennas to boost wireless bandwidthh via special ultiplexing and boost range and eignal reliability via spatial diversity
What does a Wi-Fi analyzer do?
device or software that can report characteristics of WLAN such as signal strength and channel utilization
What is SNR
Signal to noise ratio
a measurement of wireless signal level in relation to any background noise
What does “High-Gain” mean
that the antenna is strongly directional (Long Range Fixed Wireless)
What is RFID
Radio Frequency ID
Means of encoding information into passive tags which can be energized and read by radio waves from a reader device
What is NFC
Near field communication
standard two-way radio communications over very short distances, facilitating contactless payment and other similar technologies
