TCP / IP
Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol
39
What is a protocol?
A set of les that allows networked hosts to communicate data in a structured format.
40
What is a protocol Suite?
Several protocols used together.
41
What is a frame?
On an Ethernet or Wi-Fi segment, data at the link layer is packaged in a unit called a frame.
42
What is an ‘end system host’
A PC, laptop, mobile device, or server that can communicate on an IP network
43
ARP
Address Resolution Protocol
44
What does ARP do? Address Resolution Protocol
Allows a host to query which MAC address is associated with an IP address Network protocol that connects a devices ip address to its physical Mac address
45
TCP
Transmission Control Protocol
46
UDP
User Datagram Protocol
47
What is a default gateway parameter
IP configuration parameter that identifies the address of a router on the local subnet that the host can use to contact other networks
48
NAT
Network Address Translation
49
What is NAT or network address translation
Routing mechanism that conceals internal addressing schemes from the public internet by translating between a single public address on the external side of a router and private, non-routable addresses internally
50
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
51
APIPA
Automatic Private IP Addressing
52
What is APIPA
Mechanism for windows hostst configured to obtain an IP address automatically that cannot contact a DHCP server to revert to using an adress from the range 169.254.x.y
53
What is a nibble?
A 4-byte binary value (Referring to IPv6 addressing)
54
SLAAC
StateLess Address Auto Configuration
55
ND
Neighbor Discovery
56
What is SLAAC?
IPv6 addresses aren’t usually configured statically, most hosts obtain a global and link-local address via the local router
57
What is ND
Neighbor Discovery, used with IPv6 addressing, used to implement SLAAC, allows a host to discover a router, and performs the interface address querying functions
58
What is Dual Stack?
When hosts and routers operate both IPv6 and IPv4 at the same time.
59
ACK
Acknowledge (Packets, specifically packets sent with TCP protocols)
60
ACK
Acknowledge (Packets, specifically packets sent with TCP protocols)

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
64
TFTP
Trivial File Transfer Protocol
65
What is a host name?
Every device is issued a unique IP but since numbers are harder to memorize, they also each receive a unique host name which uniquely identifies the device as well with common language. Host name is unique only to the local network, whereas IP is unique to any device
