Lesson 3 (prenatal) pt.3 Flashcards
What are the 3 stages of development
Germinal stage, Embryonic stage, Fetal stage
What is the Germinal Stage
The first two weeks
Zygote to blastocycst (cluster of cells)
Formation of the placenta, umbilical cord, and embryo
What is the Embryonic Stage
After Implantation to to 8 weeks
Creation of Amniotic sac/fluid, and placenta develops into a filtering system (helps keep the baby safe
What are the three layers of blastocysts
Ectoderm: (External) Nervous system sensory organs nails, hair, teeth, outer layer of skin
Endoderm: Digestive and respiratory system, liver, pancreas
Mesoderm: (Internal) excretory, reproductory, circulatory systems, skeleton, muscles, inner layer of skin
What is the Fetal stage of development
the 9th week till the end of gestation (end of development in womb)
- the fetus grows its primary structures
- makes refinements of organ systems
- in the 13-12th week there is neuronal proliferation (neurons developing)
- baby recognizes sounds (sound waves)
- 32nd-33rd week = fetus can distinguish between novel and familiar stimuli
When is the earliest a baby can survive outside the placenta

What are the symptoms of Zika virus for a baby in the womb
microcephaly (babies head being smaller than expected), neurological defects
What are the symptoms of Cytomegalovirus for a baby in the womb
deafness, CNS (central nervous system) damage, Intellectual delay
What are the symptoms of having HIV when pregnant
Weakens immune system of baby, baby can be born with HIV
What are the symptoms of syphilis for a baby in the womb
miscarriage, stillbirth, or congenital syphilis
What drug was used common among pregnant woman in the 60’s that was later found to cause birth defects
Thalidomide
What are possible consequences of tobacco use during pregnancy
miscarriage, stillborn, premature birth, low-birth weight, and neurobehavioral disorders
What are possible consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy
learning and behavioural difficulties, and mental health problems
What is a possible consequence of Cannabis use during pregnancy
potential neurobehavioral and neurocognitive risks
What are possible consequences of using illicit drugs while pregnant
premature birth, miscarriage, early death, withdrawn symptoms
What age of having children is considered a “teratogen”
below 20 and over 35
