Lesson 3 DNA Flashcards
Center Dogma
The basic mechanism of reading and expressing genes is from DNA to RNA to protein
What is the mechanism of Central Dogma led by?
DNA codes for RNA - this guides the synthesis of proteins
RNA
Ribonucleic acid; guides protein synthesis
What does RNA contain
Contains sugar ribose and made of nucleotides
A=U
G=C
What happens to RNA before transitioning into mRNA
The base uracil replaces thymine functions
What does mRNA stand for
Messenger RNA
What does mRNA do?
Carries genetic information from the DNA in the nucleus to direct protein synthesis in the cytoplasm
What does tRNA stand for
Transfer RNA
What does tRNA do?
Transports amino acids to the ribosome
What does rRNA stand for?
Ribosomal RNA
What does rRNA do?
Acts as an enzyme during translation
What does the structure of nucleotide look like?
Phosphate Base
(Circle) (Rectangle)
Sugar
(Hexagon)
What is transcription
The information added in cells DNA instructs the cell to make messenger RNA molecule from parts of DNA
How does Transcription work?
1) mRNA is transcribed from a DNA template by RNA polymerase
2) RNA processing
3) mRNA leaves the nucleus and associates with the ribosomal subunits
What is RNA processing
Introns are cut out and the mRNA is processed
