Lesson 3, Chapter 2: Why Density and Distribution Matter Flashcards
Understand the lesson
effect of distribution and density – political processes
the US census helps identify the populations of different states, and using this formation, they can identify if representatives need to be added or subtracted from each state
effect of distribution and density – economic processes
if the population is higher in a certain area relative to others, then businesses will likely open, the government may invest in construction of roads and buildings, etc.
effect of distribution and density – social processes
if the population is higher in a certain area relative to others, then schools, hospitals, recreational facilities, etc. will open
effect of distribution and density – environment and natural resources
as the population grows, more people need to eat and drink – putting more pressure on the land and water resources; thus, the government for that area will likely regulate these resources
carrying capacity
the maximum population an environment can support
is there a certain limit to the number of factors that affect carrying capacity?
no! that’s why there is a ton of debate about it; many factors affect the carrying capacity of a certain area
