Lesson 3, Chapter 1: Spatial Concepts Flashcards
Understand the lesson
absolute location
precise geographical coordinates of a particular place on the Earth’s surface
relative location
describes one place in reference to another
space
physical characteristics of a location and can be measured mathematically
place
meaning people attribute to the locations they live in (cannot be measured mathematically; e.g. the memories people made)
distance decay
the further apart two locations are, the less they will be connected
friction of distance
the principle that movement incurs some form of cost, and these costs are proportional to the distance traveled
time-space compression
refers to the decreased distance between places measured by the time or cost it takes to travel between them (e.g. it is faster to travel from UK to NY by plane than by boat; however, the physical distance between these two places is still the same)
Patterns
a spatial observation that shows how close different populations or phenomena are to each other in a specific geographic region
random pattern
no clear pattern whatsoever
linear pattern
pattern is arranged in straight lines (neighborhoods)
dispersed pattern
pattern is dispersed throughout a large space
